Dew Drop Inn

Meet them fine gals, buddies and your pals...down in New Orleans, on a street they call LaSalle at the DEW DROP INN...Meet all your fine friends at the DEW DROP INN... Meet me at the DEW DROP INN

The Dew Drop Inn continues the legacy started by impresario, Frank Painia, in 1939. Mr. Painia presented first class entertainment in an upscale environment: all while running a full service hotel, restaurant, barber shop, hotel, and apartment complex at 2836 LaSalle Street, in New Orleans.

Today, the Dew Drop building still stands, though weakened by Hurricane Katrina. The Dew Drop Inn Hotel and Apartments, where once Ray Charles, Big Joe Turner and Tina Turner stayed, currently is vacant. The Dew Drop stage that presented many musical legends is dark. But, soon, the stage will be lit again presenting up and coming talent and top notch entertainers, including those who once graced the Dew Drop stage. Some past Dew Drop performers are: Little Richard, Fats Domino, Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Allen Toussaint, Billie Holiday, Solomon Burke, Nat "King" Cole, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, BB King, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Dinah Washington, Irma Thomas, and many others. With all's that's gone, the Dew Drop Inn spirit is alive and well, having just forged a cultural partnership with a New Orleans cultural icon, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.

The Dew Drop Inn's major comeback is scheduled for early 2010. Laid plans intend to have the Dew Drop fully restored and operable in time for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival 2010. The Dew Drop Inn, LLC along with its non-profit partners, Dew Drop Inn Foundation and Youth In Action (501 C 3 non-profit), are in the process of restoring the Dew Drop Inn structure. Besides the "for profit" venue, restaurant, hotel and apartments, The Dew Drop Inn Foundation and You In Action are developing a Dew Drop Museum (similar to the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, that was to originally be located in New Orleans). The museum will recognize the history of, and display artifacts and memorabilia from Dew Droop Inn legends, including Percy Stovall (New Orleans-based national booking agent), "Rip" Roberts (Fats Domino’s Manager), and Dave Bartholomew (Fats Domino’s Producer). The Museum already has artifact and display commitments from legends Little Richard, Allen Toussaint, Bumps Blackwell Estate (Bumps discovered Little Richard, Lloyd Price and was Little Richard’s Producer and Manager), Fats Domino, Dr. John, and others. The museum will also recognize the civil rights contributions made by Frank Painia at and through the Dew Drop. During New Orleans' civil rights era, Mr. Painia sued the City of New Orleans several times, over its segregation "race mixing" laws. With the help of his attorneys, Mr. Ernest "Dutch" Morial and Mr. A.P. Tureaud, Mr. Painia prevailed over the city to change the law. Further, the Dew Drop Inn Foundation and Youth In Action are working to secure underwriting to offer low income housing New Orleans based musicians at the Dew Drop Inn Apartments, for musicians meeting certain financial and or legendary status.

At  the Dew Drop Inn, we are moving forward by reaching back to our musical Mecca, our Apollo Theatre, the place where Little Richard and Fats Domino (Rock N’ Roll Kings) got their start. So, get ready for the revival and MEET ME AT THE DEW DROP INN!
